During installation, the Family Tree Maker installation program checks to see if you already have some commonly used files installed on your machine. One set of files we check for provides help for viewing and manipulating Scrapbook images. Because these files are usually installed as a group, instead of checking for all of them, we check for one key file. If it is found, we assume all of the rest of the group are installed, and we don't replace the files. In some situations, it appears that the files that are already on your machine do not have all of the files required by Family Tree Maker. The message "A required DLL file, LTKRN10N.DLL was not found" is an indication that this has happened. At this point, we need to use a special installation tool that will make sure that all of the required files are installed properly. For Family Tree Maker Version 6.0 and 7.0 the program is on CD-ROM #1. The program is called TS.EXE, and the instructions for using it are below. - Put appropriate CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.
- Click the Start button and select Run.
- In the Open field, type D:\TS.EXE.
(If you are installing from a CD-ROM drive other than drive D, type that letter instead. For example, to install from drive E, type E:\TS.EXE.) - In the WinZip Self-Extractor dialog box, click OK.
- Click Unzip to extract the program files into C:\FTW (the FTW folder on the C: drive or whever you chose to install Family Tree Maker during your initial installation). If you want to install to a different directory, type the directory name into the Unzip to folder field.
- Click OK when it's finished, then click Close to return to Windows.
- Start Windows Explorer.
- Open the C:\FTW (the folder into which you installed Family Tree Maker).
- Move the \Windows folder found in the C:\FTW folder to the root if your hard drive (this will be the picture of your hard drive above all of the folders).
You'll see the following screen:
Click Yes to All - Start Family Tree Maker and either open an existing Family File or create a new one.
